New and Upcoming Industry
The manufacturing of nuclear medicine is a new and upcoming industry within Miami County and the Region of North Central Indiana. Two new medical radioisotope production and research companies have made investments in excess of $70,000,000 to construct and equip new facilities at the Grissom Aeroplex over the past 3 years. These companies, AZ Isotopes and Spectron RX, use cyclotrons to produce a variety of critical isotopes that are used in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and cancer. In fact, one of the 3 largest cyclotrons in the world is located at the Grissom Aeroplex. Both AZ Isotopes and Spectron RX offer tremendous employment opportunities from administrative specialists to nuclear physicists while assisting with STEM curriculum in local school corporations. The companies project a continued and substantial growth in development of nuclear medicine and consider Grissom Aeroplex as a great location for their business based on access to the longest runway in the State of Indiana at 12,500 ft and highway accessibility for the critical shipment of these time sensitive isotopes. Major universities and colleges such as Purdue, Notre Dame, and Ivy Tech are partnered with these companies for continuous Research and Development in the production of isotopes to support nuclear medicine and other applications.
